Skilled Worker Visas

Skilled Independent Visa (subclass 189) (point-tested) stream

This stream is for Points-tested skilled workers who are not sponsored by an employer or family member or nominated by a state or territory government. It allows you to live and work in Australia as a permanent resident.

For the Skilled Independent (Points-tested) stream you need to submit an expression of interest.

You need to submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) through SkillSelect with details of your nominated occupation, skills and qualifications. SkillSelect will estimate a points score and rank you against other intending migrants.

If you are ranked high enough and there are places available for your nominated occupation, you will be invited to apply for the visa by the Department of Home Affairs (DHA).

If you are invited, you have 60 calendar days to apply for the visa. The DHA will then process your visa application.

If you are a New Zealand citizen you may be eligible to apply for the Skilled Independent visa (subclass 189) (New Zealand) stream.

  • You can be in or outside Australia when you apply for this visa.
  • You can be in or outside Australia when a decision is made on your application.

This is a permanent Visa that allows you and your family members to:

  • Reside anywhere in Australia on an indefinite basis.
  • Work as well as study in Australia.
  • Enrol in Medicare, Australia’s scheme for health-related care and expenses.
  • Apply for citizenship, if eligible.
  • Sponsor eligible family members and relatives for permanent residence.
  • Travel to and from Australia for a period of five years from the date the visa is granted. Afterwards, you will need a resident return visa or another visa to return to Australia.

Skilled Nominated Visa (subclass 190)

This visa allows skilled workers who are nominated by an Australian state or territory government to live and work in Australia as a permanent resident.

You should contact the state or territory government agency from whom you are seeking a nomination to discuss their nomination process and requirements.

You will then submit an expression of interest (EOI) through SkillSelect with details of your nominated occupation, skills and qualifications. SkillSelect will estimate a points score; if you score high enough, Australian state and territory government agencies will be able to view your EOI and decide if they want to nominate you.

If you are nominated by a state or territory agency, you will be invited to apply for the visa by the Department of Home Affairs.

If you are invited, you have 60 calendar days to apply for the visa. The DHA will then process your visa application.

  • You can be in or outside Australia when a decision is made on your application.

Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) Visa (subclass 491)

This visa is for skilled workers and their families to reside, work and study in specified areas in Australia for a period of five years.

This visa can be availed in two main ways:

  • You are nominated by an Australian State or Territory government agency or
  • You are sponsored by an eligible relative living in a designated area of Australia.

This visa might lead to the Permanent Residence (Skilled Regional) visa (subclass 191) which commences on 16 November 2022.

  • You can be in or outside Australia when you apply for the visa and when a decision is made.

This is a Provisional Visa that allows you and your family members to:

  • Reside in Australia for up to 5 years.
  • If you are nominated by a state or territory government agency, you need to reside in a designated regional area.
  • If you are sponsored by a relative, you also need to reside in a designated regional area.
  • Enrol in Medicare, Australia’s scheme for health-related care and expenses.
  • Work as well as study in Australia.
  • Include eligible family members.
  • Travel to and from Australia for a period of five years from the date the visa is granted.

Skilled Regional Visa (subclass 887)

This is a permanent visa for people who have lived and worked in specified areas of regional Australia. You must be in Australia when you apply for the visa and when a decision is made.

This is a permanent Visa that allows you and your family members to:

  • Reside and work in the Australian state or territory government you have nominated as a permanent resident.
  • Work as well as study in Australia.
  • Enrol in Medicare, Australia’s scheme for health-related care and expenses.
  • Apply for citizenship, if eligible.
  • Sponsor eligible family members and relatives for permanent residence.
  • Travel to and from Australia for a period of five years from the date the visa is granted. Afterwards, you will need a resident return visa or another visa to return to Australia.

Permanent Residence (Skilled Regional) Visa (subclass 191)

This is a permanent visa for people who have lived and worked in specified areas of regional Australia. You must be in Australia when you apply for the visa and when a decision is made.

This is a permanent Visa that allows you and your family members to:

  • Reside and work in the Australian state or territory government you have nominated as a permanent resident.
  • Work as well as study in Australia.
  • Enrol in Medicare, Australia’s scheme for health-related care and expenses.
  • Apply for citizenship, if eligible.
  • Sponsor eligible family members and relatives for permanent residence.
  • Travel to and from Australia for a period of five years from the date the visa is granted. Afterwards, you will need a resident return visa or another visa to return to Australia.

Temporary Graduate Visa (subclass 485)

This visa is for international students who have recently graduated from an Australian educational institution. It lets you live, study and work in Australia temporarily after you have finished your studies. Students are only able to access the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) once as a primary applicant.

The visa has two streams:

  • Graduate Work stream
  • Post-Study Work stream

Your qualifications must either:

  • relate to an occupation on the skilled occupation list (Graduate Work stream)
  • be a higher education degree (Post-Study Work stream)

If you are applying as the main applicant, you and anybody else covered by the application must be in Australia when you apply for this visa and when your visa is decided. Family members who apply for this visa after the main applicant has been granted the visa may be in or outside Australia when they apply.

This is a temporary Visa that allows you and your family members to:

  • Stay in Australia temporarily after you have finished your studies for up to 4 years.
  • While in Australia you can travel, work and study.

Skilled – Recognised Graduate Visa (subclass 476)

The Skilled — Recognised Graduate visa (subclass 476) is a temporary Visa that allows recent engineering graduates of eligible universities to gain up to 18 months of skilled work experience in occupations.

Your family can also apply to join you in Australia after the visa is granted.

You may be inside or outside Australia when you apply for this visa however you must be outside of Australia when the visa is decided unless you hold a Special Category visa (subclass 444). Holders of a Special Category visa (subclass 444) can be in or outside Australia when the visa is decided.

This is a temporary Visa that allows you and your family members to:

  • Stay in Australia temporarily for 18 months.
  • While in Australia you can travel, work and study.

Distinguished Talent Visa (subclass 858)

This visa falls under the subclass 858, this is meant for people with a distinguished talent. It is a visa that lets you stay in Australia on a permanent basis provided you have an internationally recognised record of exceptional and outstanding accomplishment in:

  • A profession
  • A sport
  • The arts
  • Academia and research

You need to be in Australia when you apply and when this visa is granted.

Eligibility criteria:

  • You hold an internationally recognized and outstanding and exceptional record of accomplishment in a professional, sport, arts, or academia and research.
  • You are still prominent in the area.
  • You will be asset to the Australian Community.
  • You have no problem getting employment or becoming established independently in your field in Australia.
  • You are nominated by an eligible person or an organization.
  • You meet health and character criteria.

This visa allows you to:

  • Reside in Australia on an indefinite basis.
  • Work and Study in Australia.
  • Enrol in Australian Medicare.
  • Apply for Citizenship.
  • Sponsor relatives for PR.
  • Travel to and from Australia for a period of five years since the date of the visa is granted.
